Beyond the Degree: The Value of Women in Business Communities

Beyond the Degree: The Value of Women in Business Communities

Involvement in organizations, like Women in Business, helped shape me into the person I am today, while also giving me a lifelong community that’s extended beyond graduation. I will always value how WIB had more layers than just business development, we had a fun community aspect with social events and activities.

In the spirit of the spot this organization holds in my heart, I wanted to share some key points about the value of WIB beyond the degree and why you should actually get involved, attend events, take on a leadership role, etc…because you truly get in what you put out.

1. Friendship That Lasts

The power of a strong network can’t be overstated. Through WIB, I have been given:

  • Job opportunities through fellow members and alumni.
  • Support and advice from professionals that attended our events or even just support involvement in a women’s organization.
  • A sense of belonging, confidence, and some of my best friends.

2. Mentorship

Having a mentor (or becoming one) is one of the best ways to navigate your career.

  • Need advice? WIB gave me the comfort to ask Executive Board members and guest speakers for personal and professional advice. One conversation has the potential to turn into many…you may even find a mentor.
  • Considering a career change? Reach out to WIB alumni that are in the position you are considering and see if they have time for a coffee chat.
  • Feeling imposter syndrome? We are all in this together, the person next to you in your general body meeting is probably feeling exactly the same.

3. Learning Outside the Classroom

From leadership workshops to networking events, WIB provided the toolkit for how to navigate business relationships, conversations, interviews, and more.

  • How to build a personal brand.
  • How to advocate for yourself in male-dominated fields.
  • Finding your confidence

4. Paying It Forward

One of the best parts of staying connected to this community is the opportunity to give back. I never would have thought that today, I would be telling people that I am co-founder of WIB Collective, the national organization for collegiate Women in Business chapters. Myself and hundreds, if not thousands, of other WIB alumni would jump at the opportunity to help out any current members navigating the waters of college, life, and/or business.

Graduating doesn’t mean leaving WIB behind—it means evolving with it. Whether you’re a student, recent graduate, or seasoned professional, WIB Collective is here to help you succeed at every stage of your journey.
