Take a Break: Read a Book

Take a Break: Read a Book

What activities are doing to take your mind off your daily stressors? What does taking a break look like for you? Some of us go on walks, read, watch TV, meditate, scroll through TikTok (for who knows how much longer)...etc. While we all find peace in different forms, I am excited to talk about the importance of picking up that book (don’t worry, it’s okay if it’s a fiction) you have had on your shelf for a while and finally flipping past page 1. Or, if you don’t have one that you have been wanting to read, we have a few book recommendations by women authors, shared at the end.

With our busy lives, it is hard to find time for ourselves. However, it is incredibly important to hit that mental refresh button and take a break. Reading is one of the best – in our opinion – ways to respark your creativity and productivity. It is proven to provide mental relaxation, reduce stress, improve focus, expand your knowledge…etc! If that doesn’t convince you to pick that book up, continue reading to learn more about the importance of reading.

Reading Rewires Your Brain

When browsing through different sources about the importance of reading, I am more passionate now than ever about this subject. I learned that reading truly changes the wiring in your brain, increasing your emotional intelligence and empathy. An article written by the 95 Percent Group, an educational consultant using science to empower teachers, does a wonderful job of emphasizing this importance. Even though this is geared towards teaching younger students, their points resonate with all ages. The editorial team presents 13 benefits with in-depth reasoning about why reading is important. Please feel welcome to go to the article, linked HERE, to learn more about each point. But, if you are new to this whole reading thing and are looking for a quick summary, I have included their benefits listed below:

Reading…

    1. Helps to develop empathy and foster connection with perspective taking
    2. Improves critical thinking skills
    3. Builds vocabulary authentically and enhances conversation skills
    4. Teaches social skills and allows for “rehearsal” of universal experiences
    5. Strengthens cognitive processes
    6. Helps to build background knowledge
    7. Can help reduce stress for all ages
    8. Can improve sleep
    9. Helps to build and maintain memory
    10. Strengthens writing skills
    11. Strengthens language and communication skills
    12. Builds sturdier problem solving skills
    13. Can provide a sense of support and belonging—particularly for those who might feel “on the outside”
